Sudden growth of CATIA in the yacht market
In 2007, Intrinsys were selected by Dassault Systèmes to manage the development of the yacht industry domain. Over the last six months, the business has been pleasantly surprised by the rate at which CATIA has been adopted by the industry and the prospects for 2009 are encouraging. Dassault Systèmes are looking to establish CATIA as the industry standard toolset in this domain and as part of this strategy, have recently launched the Naval Architect package. The development of this hydrostatics package now provides the industry with a single toolset that can support the entire product development process from concept design through hydrostatic calculations, detail design and manufacture. More importantly the single toolset allows changes to be propagated in either direction due to the associativity of the data.
This industry shift towards CATIA was aptly demonstrated by the significant interest shown in the recent yacht seminar in October 2008. Representatives from 24 companies including designers, naval architects, boat yards and universities were in attendance. The event included a demonstration of the core functionality of CATIA: solid modelling, surfacing, drafting, digital mock-up, rendering, systems engineering, data management, composite design and manufacture, finite element analysis and N/C manufacture. The demonstration phase was punctuated by an inspiring customer testimonial from Wayne Huntley of Southampton Yacht Services and the whole event was a tremendous success with extremely positive feedback.

To help customers with the transition to CATIA, Intrinsys have recently supplied design engineers to a number of customers in the yacht industry to work alongside their own engineers. This support has been used to provide help desk assistance during the early weeks following an implementation, whilst also providing extra resource during periods of high workload.
More recently, Intrinsys shared a stand with Dassault Systèmes at the METS event in Amsterdam. This provided an opportunity to meet new potential customers and also to catch up with existing clients that were visiting the show. Intrinsys application engineers were on hand to demonstrate some of the latest functionality available within CATIA, including the hydrostatics functionality.
