Architectural Engineering & Construction

Building Information Management (BIMan)

Building Information Management (BIMan) encourages an approach to construction projects which has its roots in manufacturing industries such as Automotive and Aerospace where the deployment of BIMan is part of Project Lifecycle Management (PLM). In these industries integrated supply chain teams are linked together seamlessly and businesses are using this approach and technology to realise huge benefits in terms of improved quality and reduced project lead-times. However the fractured nature of the construction industry where the overall project is shared by a number of contractors has meant that BIMan has taken some time to find its place.

Applying processes developed in the manufacturing world to the construction industry require adaptation due to the bespoke, one-off nature of construction projects which do not necessarily encourage the development of long term customer / supplier relationships. However larger and more forward thinking organisations have started to experience the benefits of BIMan and the rest of the industry will undoubtedly follow suit.

Just 36 years old, Thomas Heatherwick has already established himself as one of the most exciting and innovative figures in British design. He is perhaps most famous for his sculpture, The B Of The Bang, in Manchester. Heatherwick Studio is pushing the boundaries of architecture, sculpture and product design by combining all three with innovative free thinking and not letting existing construction techniques curb ambition.
