Alinghi sailor fails doping test

Daubney maintains he did not take the substances knowingly A crew member from America's Cup winners Alinghi faces a two-year ban after the first failed doping test in the history of the event. New Zealander Simon Daubney, who helped the Swiss-based team to their second trophy win in two years, tested positive for cocaine-like substances.

"I have resigned from Alinghi so that they can go about their business without distraction," said Daubney. Daubney insisted the result was because of a spiked drink. Alinghi skipper Brad Butterworth and Oracle sailor Russell Coutts testified in Daubney's defence in front of an America's Cup jury in London last week. The jury said it was "completely satisfied" that Daubney had told the truth. However Daubney's fate will be decided by the International Sailing Federation. If found guilty, it will mean he will not be able to compete until the 2009 Cup in Valencia.
